【Pottery Experience】Make Your Own Lucky Jizo – Mt. Daisen Pottery Workshop
Create a memorable souvenir from your visit to Mount Daisen.
- From ¥3,000 per person
- Duration: Approx. 1.5 hours
Create a memorable souvenir from your visit to Mount Daisen.
In this hands-on workshop, you will make a palm-sized “Goen Jizo” statue, inspired by the revered Jizo Bosatsu, the principal deity of Daisenji Temple.
Jizo has been worshiped in this region for over 1,300 years, and is beloved in Japan as a guardian who watches over travelers and brings good fortune.
In this experience, you will create your own small Jizo statue while learning about the spiritual culture of Mt. Daisen.
Each statue gently holds a 5-yen coin, which in Japanese sounds like “go-en” — meaning good connections or good fortune.
In Japan, 5-yen coins are often offered at shrines and temples as a wish for meaningful encounters and blessings.
Create your own Goen Jizo and bring home a unique symbol of your journey.
For those who want to explore the story further, we also recommend the Japanese Heritage Guided Tour option.
Highlights
Create Your Own Jizo Statue
Choose your favorite color from two types of pottery clay.
After the statue is fired, you can also add your own colors and finishing touches, creating a truly personal travel souvenir.
Every Jizo ends up with a slightly different expression — making each one unique.
Enjoy the Daisen Temple Approach
The workshop takes place along the historic approach to Daisenji Temple.
While waiting for your piece to be fired, you can:
- explore local souvenir shops
- enjoy a relaxing café break
- stroll the traditional temple street
* A different venue may be used depending on group size.
Discover the Stories Behind Jizo
With the Japanese Heritage Guided Tour option, you can explore the area around the temple while learning fascinating stories about Jizo worship and the history of Mt. Daisen.
A guide will share local knowledge and hidden insights that you might otherwise miss.
A Jizo Holding “Go-en” (Good Fortune)
Your handmade Jizo holds a 5-yen coin, symbolizing the Japanese wish for good connections and fortunate encounters.
Your statue will be fired the same day and can be taken home with you, making it a meaningful keepsake of your visit.
